Master Baccarat in 8 Easy Steps
Baccarat has earned a spot in modern casinos everywhere, and with good reason. This exciting card game seamlessly blends skill, luck and excitement, making it a favorite amongst gamers of every skill level. Follow these simple tips to master baccarat in just 7 easy steps:
Step 1: Know the Odds
Many players are surprised to learn that different casinos offer different commission or commission free versions of baccarat games. Commission on winning banker bets is 5%; however commission free games do not charge any commission on banker bets, however Banker bets will “push” or not be paid if the hand wins with a three card point total of 7. Player bets are unwavering at 1:1. You should also know the tie bet pays 8 to 1.
Step 2: Recognize That There's No "House"
In Baccarat, you're technically not playing against the "house", you have the Banker's hand and you have the Player's hand. As long as bets are placed before the cards are dealt, players can choose whether they want to bet on either the Banker's hand, Player's hand, or a tie between the hands.
Step 3: Get In On Some Side Bet Action
Casinos offer a wide array of different side bets. The most popular side bet is the Dragon Bonus, where players bet that the hand they are betting on will be a natural winner or win by a point spread of 3 or more. Commission Free Baccarat games will also have a side bet that the result of the hand will be the Banker winning with a three card point total of 7. This bet is called the Fortune 7. Side bets are optional and not required, but can optimize and increase the excitement level of the game.
Step 4: Understand the Deal
Yes, you now know you need to place your bets before the cards are dealt but it also helps to understand exactly how the cards are dealt. The dealer of the hand slides one card out from the shoe, in the Player's box. The Banker receives the next card. The dealer then goes back to the Player with a card, and finishes with the Banker. At the end of the initial deal, both the Player and the Banker have two cards.
Step 5: Get Your Math Ready
Like many card games, Baccarat requires careful point calculation. The goal of the game is to have your bet on the hand that is closer to a total of nine. After the deal, the dealer announces the point total of both the Banker and Player hands. All cards are worth their face value, except face cards and tens which are worth zero. Aces are worth one point. Hands with a value of more than 10 only use the second digit as the final total. For example, an 8 and a 5 totaling 13 would be considered 3 total points.
Step 6: Appreciate a Natural Win
A natural win occurs when the point total equals 8 or 9 with just the first two cards dealt. If either the Player or Banker has a natural win the game ends and the hand with the higher point total’s placed bets are paid.
Step 7: The Third Card
If the Banker or Player doesn’t have a natural win, they may be able to draw a third card to try and improve their point total. If the Player has a point total of 5 or less, they will draw an additional card. The Banker will draw an additional card depending on the point total of the Player hand and the point total of the Player’s third card if applicable.
Step 8: Managing Your Money and Keep Sessions Short
As with any card game, it can be easy to get dragged into a long, drawn out session that wreaks havoc on your wallet. Set a pre-determined time frame for play and a predetermined amount of money to spend… and stick to it. Once your time is up or you’ve hit your loss limit, cash out and move on to another game.
