Fresh Horses, a high energy show that features the songs of Garth Brooks is the ultimate tribute to the
country singer. Named for the singer’s 1995 album, the tribute band has
received excellent reviews and developed a huge fan following. The Fresh Horses Garth Brooks Tribute will appear at the Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo on July 31,
Troyal Garth Brooks was born in 1962 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of Troyal Raymond Brooks, Jr. and his wife, Colleen McElroy Carroll. His father was a draftsman for an oil company, but Garth got his singing talent from his mother, who was a 1950s era country singer, recording on Capitol Records and appearing on the Ozark Jubilee show. He received a track scholarship to Oklahoma State University, and began his professional music career in 1984 after graduating with a degree in advertising. He was most fond of rock music, citing as his influences James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg and Townes Van Zandt - until he heard George Strait’s debut single, Unwound, in 1981. He then switched to country music. His breakthrough first album featured country hits “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old),” “If Tomorrow Never Comes,” and “The Dance.” Over the years, Garth has claimed that the song, “The Dance,” is his favorite.
The lead singer of Fresh Horses Garth Brooks Tribute is Les Smith, who looks and sounds so much like Garth that many who have seen the show say they forget they are watching a tribute band. Les says he has heard how much he looks like Garth for years, especially after he cut his hair and put on a cowboy hat when he began playing country music almost fourteen years ago. He began performing Garth’s songs casually with five band members until he was approached by an agent who encouraged him to improve the act and take it on the road as a tribute to Garth. They have performed throughout the United States and Canada ever since. Les says their particular fan base is smaller towns as they seem to have a “die-hard love of country music and Garth Brooks.”
One of the best attributes of the Fresh Horses Garth Brooks Tribute is their professional attitude and excellent showmanship, which many people say is well worth the ticket price. Their shows are consistently sold out and music lovers of all genres will enjoy their stage presence. Fresh Horses sings such Garth favorites as:
- Standing Outside the Fire
- Unanswered Prayers
- If Tomorrow Never Comes
- Two Pina Coladas
- Friends in Low Places
- The Dance
- The Thunder Rolls
- To Make You Feel My Love
Fans can also expect to hear not only Garth’s most popular songs, but
some that may be less recognizable as well.
