If you want to get in touch with nature this summer, check out these five best camping destinations in Iowa. Each has all the essential facilities and a few extras to make your next camping trip so amazing you’ll never want to leave.
1. Elk Rock State Park Campground, Lake Red Rock
Thanks to its lakeside location, Elk Rock State Park Campground is a hotspot for anglers eager to reel in everything from crappie to largemouth bass. But it’s not all about fishing: this campsite also has standout equestrian facilities, including stalls, wash stations and a large riding area. Another highlight is the network of multi-use trails which wind their way through an assortment of habitats full of native flora and fauna.
2. Ledges State Park, Madrid

The thick canopy of trees covering the campsites muffles out unwanted noise for silent nights and also keeps in the heat on chilly evenings. There are six miles of walking and hiking trails in the surrounding area of various lengths and difficulties, plus a 91-mile cycling route and the Des Moines River, which offers boating and fishing.
3. Backbone State Park, Strawberry Point

This camping location offers rock climbing for the adventure-hungry, as well as the chance to step back in time at the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum for those curious about the history of the local area. There’s also the usual rugged multi-use trails, cycling routes, birdwatching, fishing opportunities and picnic spots.
